Refinishing Slate Tile

Slate is a natural stone material known for its rugged texture and rich coloring. Because of its attractive appearance, as well as its strength and durability, homeowners often choose slate tile for both indoor and outdoor applications. Although slate lasts for many years, it requires routine maintenance to keep it protected against stains and dirt. By removing old sealer and applying new finishes, you can restore the appearance of your slate tile, or give it a whole new look.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, vacuum the floor to remove all dirt and debris. Use a hose attachment to reach into tight corners or to remove built-up dirt in the textured surface of the tiles.
Secondly, apply a chemical stripping solution. It is helpful to choose a stripper formulated for sandstone tiles, but any chemical stripper will do the job. Mop this material liberally over the surface of the stone and apply it to all cracks, joints and voids within the tiled surface.
Thirdly, allow the stripper to sit for 10 minutes, or as directed on the application instructions. As the chemicals interact with the sealer on your slate tiles, the surface will peel or blister slightly.
Fourthly, scrub the tiles to remove the sealer and the stripping compound. For small surfaces, use a stiff scrub brush. For larger floors, choose an electric floor buffer. You may still need to use a scrub brush to reach tight corners or other small spaces.
Fifthly, use a wet/dry vacuum to remove all debris and "slurry" from the floor. Follow up with a damp mop to ensure that all of the stripper and sealer have been removed.
